Making a living
I work for DigitalOcean as a software engineer on the Virtual Machine (VM) team. The software I write primarily interfaces with libvirt and QEMU as well as the underlying Linux system.
We write our software in service to the Droplet product (read: virtual private server), and also in service to any other products that are built on top of the Droplet product.
Homelab
Homelabbing has been a very rewarding hobby for me.
I run a Jellyfin instance for streaming media from my NAS to various devices on my home network. This is definitely a household favorite.
I recently purchased a smart lightbulb so I can adjust the lighting in my office depending on what I'm working on. For example, during the workday I have it at a colder, brighter daylight setting. When playing video games I set it to a dimmer purple. I think I might end up buying more smart bulbs for different rooms and managing them with Home Assistant sometime soon. I think it'd be cool to start with adding them to the bedroom so they can gradually dim while winding down with a book.
In addition to providing our very own Netflix-like streaming experience with Jellyfin, I also use my homelab to develop different skillsets. I've learned a lot about computer networking and security thanks to my Mikrotik routerboard and UniFi switches.
I also self-host a Mattermost instance for my friend group, and I am looking to deploy a layer 2 VPN so we can play games from our childhood which don't have active servers or a way to self-host a game server, but that do work over a LAN connection.
